Recovery Support Specialists and Case Managers can finish their academic training in as little as 50 clock hours (a little over 1 week!)
Becoming an Addiction Counselor takes a bit more training but, if you work on it 40 hours a week, you can complete it in 7 to 12 weeks, depending on your state requirements. That is much faster and cheaper than going to college for multiple semesters.
Certificate Overview
There are a variety of different certifications you can get to advance in the field and increase your salary.
Each state certification board has its own certifications. Some states have one or two, other states have ten or more. To find out what your state offers, search in any browser for “addiction certification board” and the name of your state. Example, to find Florida's certification board, search for: Addiction Certification Board Florida
Even if your state does not formally offer a particular certification, demonstrating to your employer that you have specialized training can help you get hired and earn more.
Some people breaking into the field will get an entry level certification while they work on their bachelor's degree. The courses for the entry level certificate can be applied toward other or more advanced certificates later.
Additionally, people who are already licensed as counselors (LPC, LMHC), social workers (LCSW, LSW, MSW, RSW), psychologists or family therapists (LMFT) can earn continuing education (CEUs) while earning specialty certificates.
- Entry level addiction and behavioral health certificates only require a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Advanced certificates require a bachelor's degree.
Entry Level Certificates
Addiction Counselor
Train to get certified as an addiction counselor in less than 6 months. This track provides the required addiction-specific training hours in a self-paced multimedia course. This training is available to help you meet your state requirements for becoming certified or licensed as an addiction counselor (CADC 1, LADAC 1, CAC etc.)
- Addiction Counselor Certification Training (Most states) 415 Hours. This is the most comprehensive course and will best prepare you for the NAADAC or IC&RC exam. It meets or exceeds the requirements of most states.
Allied Addiction Practitioner
This track provides the 75 hours in substance use disorder relevant training required by the Pennsylvania Certification Board. Register here
Associate Addiction Counselor and Certified Associate Addiction Counselor
Associate Addiction Counselor (Pennsylvania) This track provides the required 120 hours of substance abuse specific training required by the Pennsylvania Certification Board. Register here
Certified Associate Addiction Counselor (Pennsylvania) This track provides the required 300 hours of substance abuse specific training required by the Pennsylvania Certification Board. Register here
Associate Addiction Counselor (Virginia) This track provides the required 200 hours of substance abuse specific training required by the Virginia Certification Board. LPCs and LCSWs can earn CEUs while taking this track. Register here

Community Health Worker
This track provides the 30 hours of specific training required by the Florida Certification Board to be certified as a community health worker. Learn More
Interventionist Certificate
People struggling with addiction or mental health issues may not realize they have a problem or the extent of the problem. The interventionist certificate training provides you with tools to help families help their loved ones recognize the need for help and start considering treatment. This track provides the training required by the state of Georgia to become a peer recovery coach. Learn More
Recovery Peer Specialist
People with lived experience provide a wealth of information, strength and hope to those early in recovery. This program is ideal for those who have at least 2 years in recovery. Learn More
Recovery Residence Administrator
Many states now require that sober living and transitional living homes have a recovery residence administrator assigned. This course will prepare you to become a recovery residence administrator. Learn more
Recovery Support Specialist
An entry-level certificate for those who do not have “lived experience” with mental health or addictive disorders. This training will help you get your foot in the door to start gaining your hours for higher levels of certification. In some states, once you are state-certified, your agency can bill Medicaid for your services. Learn More
Sex and Porn Addiction Recovery Coach
Learn the intricacies of helping people address behavioral addictions such as pornography and sex. Unlike substances, in today's world, most people cannot stop using all computers nor are they willing to become celibate for the rest of their lives. Trauma Informed Care
The majority of people with addiction and mental health issues struggle with a history of trauma. Trauma-informed care recognizes the wide-spread impact of trauma and actively seeks to avoid retraumatizing individuals by helping them feel safe and empowered. Learn more

This track provides the 40 hours of addiction-specific training required by the Florida Certification Board. Learn More

This certificate demonstrates to employers that you have specialized training preparing you to work with youth with emotional and behavioral disorders. Learn More
Advanced Certificates
As mentioned above, advanced certifications require at least a bachelor's degree. Some states require the degree to be in a human services field, other states do not. It is easy to find out what the current rules are by reviewing the requirements for that certification on your state's certification board website.

Advanced Addiction Counselor
- Addiction Professional Tier 1 (Florida) 150 Hours
- Addiction Professional Tier 2 (Florida) 250 Hours
- Alcohol and Drug Counselor (Virginia) 300 Hours
- Masters Level Certified Addictions Professional (Florida) 161 Hours
Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager (Basic)
Most states do not certify or license case managers. However, in Florida you can get certified as a Behavioral Health Case Manager.
Behavioral Health Case Manager 50-hour training meets the requirements of the Florida Certification Board.
Certified Case Manager (Comprehensive)
A more comprehensive training designed to prepare you to work with patients in a variety of settings from behavioral health to long-term care and hospice is the Comprehensive Behavioral Health Case Manager. This 325-hour training will help you learn the basics of all of the topics covered by CCMC (Commission for Case Manager Certification). Again, most states do not require you to have formal certification by CCMC to be a case manager. Clinical Supervisor Certification Training (30 Hours)
Some states do not require 30 hours, while others do. You can opt to only take the number of hours you need from this track if you do not want the full learning experience. Learn More

This certificate prepares you to work with justice-involved individuals in jails and prisons and who are on probation. Many states offer a criminal justice specialization credential for people who are currently licensed or certified as addiction counselors. Learn More

Mental Health Professional (Certified)
A Certified Mental Health Professional can work in treatment centers providing behavioral health services to people with mental illnesses and addictions. Not every state has an alternative to licensure as a mental health professional, but many do. Even if your state does not certify mental health professionals, this training demonstrates that you have significant, advanced training in screening for and addressing behavioral health issues. As distance or virtual counseling becomes more common, many states have determined that clinicians must have specific training in the provision of telehealth services.
